Established in 1993, Japan Center for a Sustainable Environment and Society (JACSES) is an NGO dedicated to achieving sustainable development and social justice in society. We broadly engage the general public and experts in research, policy advocacy, and awareness-raising.
Japanese private banks are key actors in coal finance worldwide. For instance, Japan’s three megabanks - Mizuho, SMBC, and MUFG - are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd largest lenders to the coal industry. We urge Japanese private banks to stop supporting harmful fossil fuels and to end loans, stock, and bond investments for companies that are highly dependent/involved in the fossil fuel sector.
